Government of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia – ancient Colchis coast

The name Abkhazia refers to a land on the eastern shore of the Black Sea, between the mountains of the Greater Caucasus and the sea. In antiquity this coast belonged to the world of Colchis, famous in Greek legend as the destination of the Argonauts, and Greek traders founded settlements along its shores.

Over the centuries the region saw the spread of Christianity, medieval churches and fortresses, and a lively mix of languages and cultures. Its subtropical coastline, mountain valleys and old monasteries have long fascinated travellers. Many people carry memories and family stories connected with this land – we warmly invite you to share your recollections, traditions and photos with the community.
