Shida Kartli – heart of historic Inner Kartli
Shida Kartli, meaning Inner Kartli, takes its name from the historical-geographic province at the heart of Georgia. Kartli was the core of the ancient Georgian kingdom of Iberia, and its fertile lands along the Mtkvari (Kura) River have been settled and farmed for millennia.
The region is home to Gori, its main town, and to the ancient rock-hewn town of Uplistsikhe, one of the oldest urban settlements in Georgia. Today Shida Kartli is a landlocked region in eastern Georgia, known for its orchards and farming villages. Do you have stories from your village, your family or the local harvest?
