Mtskheta-Mtianeti – Mtskheta, ancient capital of Iberia
The region takes its name from Mtskheta, one of the oldest towns in Georgia and the ancient capital of the kingdom of Iberia, until King Dachi moved the capital to Tbilisi in the 6th century. Mtskheta is also closely linked with the adoption of Christianity in Georgia in the 4th century.
Its historic monuments, including Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and the Jvari Monastery, are recognised as UNESCO World Heritage. North of the town, the mountainous Mtianeti stretches into the Greater Caucasus, with valleys, villages and old traditions. Today the region is a place of pilgrimage, history and mountain landscapes.
