Kakheti – golden age of the Kingdom of Kakheti after the 1460s

After the disintegration of the united Georgian Kingdom, Kakheti became an independent kingdom in the 1460s. Under the long reigns of Alexander I, Levan and Alexander II, it enjoyed peace and prosperity: the population grew, and its capital Gremi, together with Zagemi, became one of the Caucasus’s leading urban centres, attracting merchants and artisans.

Kakheti had already been an independent principality from the late 8th century, before King David the Builder incorporated it into his kingdom in the early 12th century. Today, with Telavi as its centre, Kakheti is one of Georgia’s most important wine regions. Raise a glass and share your family traditions and local stories with us!
