Kvemo Kartli – historic province of Lower Kartli

Kvemo Kartli, meaning Lower Kartli, is both a historic province and a present-day region in south-eastern Georgia. As part of Kartli, it belonged to the heartland of the ancient Georgian kingdom of Iberia and lies along long-used routes linking the Caucasus with the lands to the south.

The region has been home to many peoples, and its villages reflect a diverse mix of languages and traditions. Its regional capital today is Rustavi, an industrial city close to Tbilisi, while the countryside is known for farming and old churches. Written sources on local history are often scarce – help fill the gaps by sharing your family and village stories!
