Tbilisi – founded by King Vakhtang I of Iberia in the 5th century
According to a famous legend, King Vakhtang I of Iberia was hunting in the forest when his falcon and a pheasant fell into a hot spring. Impressed by the warm waters, he decided to build a city there – the origin of Tbilisi in the 5th century. His successor, King Dachi, moved the capital of Iberia from Mtskheta to Tbilisi and began its fortress walls.
Archaeologists have found traces of settlement going back to the Bronze Age, and from the 6th century the city grew thanks to its position on trade routes between Europe and Asia. Today Tbilisi is Georgia’s capital, home to more than 1.3 million people. Share your neighbourhood stories with us!
