North Bank Division – Kunta Kinteh Island and the river heritage

On the north bank of the Gambia River lies Kunta Kinteh Island, formerly James Island, together with nearby Juffureh – places linked to the history of the transatlantic slave trade and recognised as World Heritage. They are sites of remembrance and draw visitors from around the world.

North Bank was one of the five administrative divisions of the Gambia, with Kerewan as its capital; it was later reorganised as the Kerewan Local Government Area without any change to its territory. Today more than 220,000 people live in its riverside towns and farming villages. Share your family stories and village traditions with fellow members!
