Mahaica-Berbice – Farming lands between two historic rivers

Mahaica-Berbice, officially Region 5 of Guyana, stretches between the Mahaica and Berbice rivers, whose names recall the colonial divisions of the old Guianese coast. Over generations, the fertile coastal plain here was shaped by drainage, farming and village life, and agriculture and livestock rearing remain the backbone of the region's economy.

Fort Wellington serves as the regional capital, and around 58,000 people call the region home according to the 2022 census. Although it is one of Guyana's smaller regions by area, its communities carry rich traditions from many backgrounds. Do you know stories about your village, your family's farm or old customs along the rivers? Share them with the community!
