Upper Demerara-Berbice – Guyana's bauxite mining heartland

Upper Demerara-Berbice, Region 10 of Guyana, is closely linked to one resource: bauxite. The region's significant deposits gave rise to a mining industry that shaped its towns, especially Linden on the Demerara River, and made the area an important part of Guyana's economic history.

Known as the gateway to the interior, the region covers some 17,000 square kilometres in the central east of the country and had around 45,500 inhabitants at the 2022 census. Roads and rivers leading inland pass through here, connecting the coast with the savannahs and forests further south. Did you or your family work in the mines, or do you remember how the towns grew? Tell us your story!
