Barima-Waini – Guyana's northwestern land of rivers and forests

Barima-Waini, Region 1 of Guyana, lies in the far northwest of the country, where rivers, mangroves and rainforest meet the Atlantic Ocean. For generations, Indigenous communities have lived along its waterways, and their knowledge of the land remains part of the region's identity.

The region is divided into three sub-regions, Mabaruma, Matakai and Moruca, and covers more than 20,000 square kilometres with a population of around 27,000. Life still follows the rhythm of the rivers, with boats often the most important means of travel between villages. Fishing, farming and forest products sustain many households.
