Demerara-Mahaica – Home of Georgetown, Guyana's capital

Demerara-Mahaica, Region 4, is the smallest region of Guyana by area but by far the most populous. At its heart lies Georgetown, the national capital, which grew from a colonial town on the mouth of the Demerara River into the country's political and commercial centre.

The coastal plantations of Demerara were also the scene of the Demerara uprising of 1823, when enslaved people rose up to demand their freedom, a milestone on the road to the abolition of slavery. Today the region, with nearly 350,000 inhabitants, hosts Guyana's main government buildings and the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.
