Cuyuni-Mazaruni – Where rivers meet and gold drew prospectors
Cuyuni-Mazaruni, Region 7 of Guyana, is a land of great rivers and highlands along the Pakaraima mountain range. Its capital, Bartica, sits where the Essequibo meets the Mazaruni and Cuyuni rivers, and has long been the starting point for journeys into the interior.
Gold and diamond mining have shaped the region's history and character, drawing prospectors and workers from many places, while timber logging and agriculture also support local families. With more than 47,000 square kilometres, it is Guyana's second-largest region, yet home to only about 30,000 people. Do you remember stories from the mining camps, river journeys or life in Bartica? We'd love to hear them!
