Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo – The savannah lands of the Rupununi

Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo, Region 9 of Guyana, is defined by the wide Rupununi savannah, framed by the Kanuku and Kamoa highlands and dense forests. For many generations this has been the homeland of Indigenous peoples, whose villages, languages and traditions remain central to life in the region.

Cattle ranching on the open savannah became another important part of the region's story, and livestock rearing, agriculture and the mining of semi-precious stones still sustain its economy. Bordering Brazil, the region covers almost 58,000 square kilometres but has only around 30,000 inhabitants. Do you know legends of the savannah, ranch stories or village traditions?
