County Kilkenny – the ancient Kingdom of Osraige
County Kilkenny is rooted in the ancient Kingdom of Osraige (Ossory), which existed from at least the 2nd century until the 13th century and was ruled by the Mac Giolla Phádraig family, with Cill Chainnigh as their stronghold. The Diocese of Ossory, founded in 549, matched the kingdom's territory and still bears its name.
The county's name means the Church of Cainneach, or Canice, which probably refers to the church and round tower that became St. Canice's Cathedral. Over the centuries Kilkenny grew into one of Ireland's most important medieval towns. Today the county, with just over 100,000 residents, is loved for its heritage, crafts and hurling.
