County Waterford – Ireland's great Viking settlement
County Waterford's Viking heritage is exceptional. Reginald's Tower in Waterford city is one of the first buildings in Ireland built with brick and mortar, and at Woodstown, west of the city, archaeologists discovered a 9th-century settlement described as the only large-scale Viking settlement of that period found so far in Western Europe.
Much older traces survive too, in the form of megalithic tombs and ogham stones scattered across the county, which grew from the Gaelic territory of the Déise. Later the Anglo-Norman invasion left its mark on the architecture. Today Waterford combines a historic city, a Gaeltacht area and a scenic coastline. Do you know a Waterford story or legend?
