County Cork – the Rebel County and the Kingdom of Desmond
County Cork has long been known as the Rebel County, a nickname with 15th-century origins that later became linked to the county's prominent role in the struggle for Irish independence in the early 20th century. It remains a proud part of local identity.
Much of today's county once belonged to the Kingdom of Deas Mumhan, or Desmond, ruled by the MacCarthy Mór dynasty. After the Norman invasion in the 12th century the MacCarthys were pushed westwards into West Cork and Kerry, and castles such as Dunlough near Mizen Head recall those times. Today Cork is Ireland's largest county, with lively market towns and a stunning coast. Have a Cork story? Share it with the community!
