County Limerick – Lough Gur and 5,000 years of settlement
County Limerick has been home to people for a very long time: settlers lived around Lough Gur as early as 3000 BC, and megalithic remains at Duntryleague are even older. After the arrival of the Celts around 400 BC, the area was divided into small kingdoms, and from the 4th to the 11th century the kingdom of the Uí Fidgenti covered much of today's county.
In the mid-900s the Danes established Limerick as a town and base, allying with local families and clashing with neighbouring clans, especially the O'Briens of Dál gCais. Today the county has around 210,000 residents, nearly half of them in Limerick City. Have a Limerick story or family tale? Share it with the community!
