County Meath – the Royal County of Tara and Brú na Bóinne

County Meath is known as the Royal County because it was the seat of the High King of Ireland at Tara. It grew out of the eastern part of the old Kingdom of Mide, the 'middle' kingdom, whose lands once reached into many of today's neighbouring counties.

In the north-east of the county lies Brú na Bóinne, a 5,000-year-old archaeological complex and UNESCO World Heritage Site that ranks among the most important prehistoric landscapes in Europe. Even earlier, Mesolithic flints found at Randalstown north of Navan show that people lived here thousands of years ago. Today Meath combines rich heritage with growing towns close to Dublin.
