County Roscommon – Rathcroghan, royal seat of Queen Medb

County Roscommon is home to Rathcroghan near Tulsk, a complex of archaeological sites linked to the legendary Queen Medb (Maeve). It was the seat of the Kings of Connacht and later of High Kings of Ireland, and the starting point of the Táin Bó Cúailnge, the Cattle Raid of Cooley, one of the great epics of Irish mythology.

The county also holds prehistoric ringforts such as Carnagh West and Drummin. As an administrative unit, Roscommon has its roots in the Middle Ages, when districts known as 'The King's Cantreds' were leased to the native kings of Connacht and eventually formed the county. Today Roscommon is a rural county of lakes and farmland. Have a Roscommon story? Share it with the community!
