Waterford – Ireland's oldest city, founded by Vikings in 914

Waterford is Ireland's oldest city. Its name comes from the Old Norse Veðrafjǫrðr, while its Irish name, Port Láirge, means Lárag's port. Vikings first settled nearby in 853, and after being driven out around 902 they returned in 914 under Jarl Ottar and later Ragnall ua Ímair, building what would become Ireland's first city.

In 1170, Diarmait Mac Murchada, the deposed King of Leinster, returned with Cambro-Norman forces under Richard de Clare, known as Strongbow, and the city entered a new chapter of Norman influence. Today Waterford, at the head of Waterford Harbour, is a vibrant city of around 60,000 people. Do you have a Waterford story or memory? Share it with the community!
