Eastern Region (Iceland) – the Eastfjords and their coastal communities
Iceland's Eastern Region, Austurland, is defined by its jagged coastline of deep fjords, known as the Eastfjords. For centuries, life here was shaped by the sea and the mountains: small fishing villages grew up at the heads of the fjords, while farms spread along the valleys inland, connected by mountain passes that were often difficult to cross in winter.
The region covers more than 15,000 square kilometres but is home to only around 11,000 people, which gives it a sense of space and closeness to nature. Its largest town today is Egilsstaðir, an inland hub for the whole area. Do you know a story, a legend or a family memory from the Eastfjords? Share it with the community!
