Southern Region (Iceland) – Þingvellir, where the Althing met from 930

Iceland's Southern Region, Suðurland, is home to Þingvellir, where the Althing, one of the world's oldest parliamentary assemblies, was established around 930. For centuries, chieftains and farmers from across the island gathered there each summer to make laws and settle disputes, making the south a cradle of Icelandic society.

The region is also shaped by powerful nature: volcanoes, glaciers, black-sand beaches and fertile farmland have defined life here since the settlement age. Farming communities along the rivers and coast have long been the backbone of the region. Today about 34,000 people live in Suðurland, with Selfoss as its largest town.
