Southern Peninsula (Iceland) – fishing villages at the tip of Reykjanes

The Southern Peninsula, Suðurnes, takes its name from Reykjanes, the southwestern tip of the Reykjanes Peninsula. For generations, life on this rugged, lava-covered land was built around the sea: fishing villages grew up along the coast, where rich fishing grounds lay close to shore and the harbours offered shelter from the Atlantic storms.

The peninsula's volcanic landscape, with lava fields, hot springs and steaming ground, is a constant reminder of the powerful forces beneath Iceland. Today about 31,000 people live here, making it one of the more densely populated parts of the island, with Keflavík as its administrative centre.
