Western Region (Iceland) – saga country and home of Snorri Sturluson
Iceland's Western Region, Vesturland, is often called saga country. It was at Reykholt that the medieval writer and chieftain Snorri Sturluson lived, one of the most important figures in Icelandic literature, and the area around Borgarnes is closely tied to Egils saga and the story of Egill Skallagrímsson.
The region stretches along the island's west coast, from fertile valleys to the Snæfellsnes peninsula with its famous glacier. For centuries farming and fishing shaped daily life, and the old stories were passed down from generation to generation. Today about 17,000 people live in the region.
