Northwestern Region (Iceland) – Hólar, episcopal see from 1106
The Northwestern Region, Norðurland vestra, is home to Hólar in Hjaltadalur, which became the seat of Iceland's northern bishopric in 1106. For centuries Hólar was one of the country's great centres of church life and learning, and it remains an important historic site today.
The region is known for its broad valleys, horse breeding and farming traditions. Along its coast stands Hvítserkur, a 15-metre basalt rock that is said to resemble a dragon bending down to drink – a favourite subject of local tales. Today the largest town is Sauðárkrókur, with around 2,600 residents. Do you know a story, legend or family memory from the northwest? Share it with the community!
