Hanover Parish – established in 1723 and named for the House of Hanover

Hanover was established on 12 November 1723 from parts of Westmoreland and St James. It was named in honour of King George I, a member of the German House of Hanover; a proposal to call it St. Sophia, after the king's mother, was not approved by the assembly. Its capital has had several names over time – St Lusia, St. Lucia, St. Lucea – and is today known as Lucea.

Before that, the area was part of the Spanish colony until 1655. Hanover is also the birth parish of Alexander Bustamante, labour leader, first head of government under universal suffrage and a National Hero of Jamaica. Today it is one of the island's smallest parishes. Have a Hanover story? Share it with the community!
