Saint Catherine Parish – Spanish Town, Jamaica's first capital
Saint Catherine is home to Spanish Town, Jamaica's first capital, originally founded by the Spanish as San Jago de la Vega or Santiago de la Vega, 'St. James of the Plain'. For centuries the town was the seat of government, and its squares and old buildings still recall its long role at the centre of the island's political life.
The parish lies in the southeast of the island, in the county of Middlesex, and has long been valued for its many resources, from fertile plains to its coastline. Today Saint Catherine is one of Jamaica's largest and most economically important parishes, with fast-growing towns and communities. Do you have a story or family memory from Saint Catherine?
