Saint John Figtree Parish – Nelson's marriage on Nevis in 1787
Saint John Figtree is one of the five parishes of Nevis. Its parish church, the Fig Tree Church, keeps the record of a famous event: in 1787, the young naval officer Horatio Nelson married Frances Nisbet, a widow from Nevis, on the island. The entry in the church register still attracts visitors interested in the island's past.
Like the rest of Nevis, the parish was long shaped by sugar plantations and by the enslaved Africans whose labour and culture formed the island's society. Today Saint John Figtree is a quiet rural parish of villages and green hillsides on the slopes of Nevis Peak. Do you know a local story or family memory from Saint John Figtree?
