Saint Thomas Lowland Parish – Jamestown, Nevis's first British settlement
Saint Thomas Lowland was the first parish established on Nevis and home to the island's first British settlement, Jamestown. Legend has it that Jamestown was swallowed by a tidal wave in the late 1680s, although there is no archaeological evidence to support the story. Either way, the first settlement was abandoned, but St. Thomas' Church, on higher ground, still stands.
The church is a reminder of the parish's long history, which, like the rest of the island, was shaped by sugar and by the people who worked the plantations. Today the parish is known for its sandy beaches, especially the three-mile-long Pinney's Beach. Do you know a story or legend from Saint Thomas Lowland? Share it with the community!
