Maseru District – Heartland around Lesotho's capital on the Caledon River
Maseru District lies on Lesotho's western edge, where the Caledon River forms the border with South Africa's Free State. Its town of Maseru grew from a small colonial post into the nation's capital and only true city, and it has been the seat of government since Lesotho gained independence in 1966. Not far from the city rises Thaba Bosiu, the mountain stronghold from which King Moshoeshoe I gathered the Basotho nation in the nineteenth century – a place still deeply honoured today.
Today the district is home to nearly a quarter of the country's people and is its busiest centre for trade, education and administration. Do you know stories, photos or memories from Maseru and its villages? Share them with the community!
