Mafeteng District – Lowland farming country on Lesotho's western border

Mafeteng District stretches across the fertile lowlands of western Lesotho, bordering South Africa's Free State. For generations its open plains have been among the country's important farming areas, and the town of Mafeteng – the only town in the district – developed as a small administrative and trading centre, a so-called camptown, serving the surrounding villages.

Its position on the border has long made the district a place of passage, where people, goods and ideas moved between Lesotho and its neighbour. Today around 180,000 people live here, most of them in rural communities that keep up traditional Basotho ways of life. Do you have stories, photos or family memories from Mafeteng? We warmly invite you to share them here!
