Mohale's Hoek District – Land named after Mohale, brother of Moshoeshoe I

Mohale's Hoek District in south-western Lesotho carries the name of Mohale, a younger brother of King Moshoeshoe I, the founder of the Basotho nation. The name recalls the time when the Basotho kingdom took shape in the nineteenth century and families settled the valleys and foothills of the south.

The town of Mohale's Hoek grew into the district's administrative camptown and only town, bordered by South Africa to the south-west and by five other Lesotho districts. Today the district is a largely rural region of villages, grazing land and mountain scenery, home to roughly 175,000 people.
