Khovd Province – Meeting place of many peoples on the Khovd River

Khovd Province in western Mongolia takes its name from the Khovd River, which flows through its mountains and steppes. For centuries these lands at the foot of the Altai have been home to many different peoples and clans, making Khovd one of the most ethnically diverse regions of the country, with its own dialects, songs and traditions. The provincial capital, also called Khovd, grew into an important trading and administrative town of the west.

Lying about 1,580 km from Ulaanbaatar, the province remains a land of herders, rivers, lakes and snow-capped peaks, where traditional nomadic life continues alongside town life. Do you have stories, photos or memories from Khovd? Share them with our community!
