Dornogovi Province – The East Gobi and the Khamaryn Khiid monastery
Dornogovi, the "East Gobi", lies in south-eastern Mongolia on the border with China's Inner Mongolia. Its harsh climate – with sand and snow storms and temperatures from −40 °C to 40 °C – has always demanded great resilience from the herders who live here. The region is also home to Khamaryn Khiid, a monastery associated with the nineteenth-century lama and poet Danzanravjaa, which remains an important place of pilgrimage.
Without lakes or rivers but with ample groundwater, the East Gobi has long been crossed by caravan routes, and today by the railway linking Mongolia and China. Do you have stories, photos or memories from Dornogovi? Share them with our community!
