Ömnögovi Province – The Flaming Cliffs and the dinosaur finds of the Gobi
Ömnögovi, the South Gobi, is Mongolia's southernmost and largest province. It became world-famous in the 1920s when expeditions at the Flaming Cliffs (Bayanzag) uncovered dinosaur fossils and the first scientifically recognised dinosaur eggs, revealing the Gobi as one of the richest palaeontological regions on Earth. For centuries, herders and caravans also crossed these vast plains, relying on scattered wells and oases.
Today the province, with its capital Dalanzadgad, is known for Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park, the Singing Sand Dunes of Khongoryn Els and its rich deposits of gold and copper. Vegetables are grown in some oases, such as Dal. Do you have stories or photos from the South Gobi? Share them with our community!
