Khövsgöl Province – Land of Mongolia's great freshwater lake

Khövsgöl Province, Mongolia's northernmost aimag, was established in 1931 and takes its name from Lake Khövsgöl, the country's largest freshwater lake. Its first administrative centre was Khatgal, on the southern tip of the lake, until the capital moved to Mörön in 1933. For generations the forests, mountains and river valleys here have supported herders, including reindeer-herding families of the northern taiga.

The province borders Buryatia and Tuva and is dominated by the Khangai ranges and alpine mountains such as Khoridol Saridag. Today its lake and taiga forests make it one of Mongolia's best-loved natural destinations. Do you have stories, photos or memories from Khövsgöl? Share them with our community!
