Uvs Province – From the Jewel Mountain Province to Uvs aimag (1933)
After the Mongolian Revolution of 1921, the government created the Jewel Mountain Province (Chandmani uuliin aimag), which covered the whole western part of the country. In 1931 it was divided into the Khovd and Dörvöd aimags, and in 1933 Dörvöd was renamed Uvs, after Mongolia's largest lake, Uvs Nuur. The Uvs Lake basin, with its mix of desert, steppe, taiga and mountains, is today part of a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The provincial capital Ulaangom lies at 936 metres above sea level, some 1,336 km from Ulaanbaatar. Herding and traditional crafts remain central to life here. Do you have stories, photos or memories from Uvs? Share them with our community!
