Selenge Province – Fertile river lands and the Amarbayasgalant Monastery

Selenge lies in the broad, fertile basins of the Selenge and Orkhon rivers, among Mongolia's most important waterways. Here, in the eighteenth century, the Amarbayasgalant Monastery was built, one of the most important and best-preserved Buddhist monasteries in the country and still a place of prayer and pilgrimage. The river valleys have long made Selenge one of Mongolia's main farming regions, with fields of wheat and vegetables.

The province borders Russia and has its capital at Sükhbaatar, while the province of Darkhan-Uul forms an enclave within it. Today Selenge combines agriculture, forests and river landscapes. Do you have stories or photos from Selenge? Share them with our community!
