Zavkhan Province – Uliastai, historic garrison town of the west

Zavkhan Province in western Mongolia is named after the Zavkhan River, which forms its border with Govi-Altai. Its capital, Uliastai, is one of the oldest towns in the region, having grown in the Qing era as a garrison and administrative centre in the west of Mongolia. Nestled between mountains, it has long been a meeting place for herders, traders and officials.

Today the province, about 1,104 km from Ulaanbaatar, offers a striking mix of snow-capped peaks, sand dunes, lakes and grasslands, where herding families continue their traditional way of life. Do you have stories, photos or family memories from Zavkhan and Uliastai? Share them with our community!
