Khentii Province – Birthplace of Genghis Khan

Khentii Province in eastern Mongolia, named after the Khentii Mountains, is best known as the birthplace – and most likely the final resting place – of Genghis Khan. From the rivers and forests of this region, Temüjin rose to unite the Mongol tribes in the early thirteenth century and founded the Mongol Empire, one of the largest empires in history. The places connected with his youth and his clan are still honoured by many Mongolians.

Today the province's capital is named Chinggis City, and the landscape of mountains, rivers and steppe remains home to herders who keep nomadic traditions alive. Do you have stories, legends or photos from Khentii? Share them with our community!
