Darkhan-Uul Province – Darkhan, industrial city founded in 1961
The city of Darkhan was founded on 17 October 1961 within Selenge Province, planned as Mongolia's second industrial centre to relieve pressure on the capital, Ulaanbaatar. Built in a wide valley in the north of the country, it quickly grew with factories, apartment blocks and schools, attracting families from across Mongolia who shaped its community.
In 1994 Darkhan was separated from Selenge and, under the Law on Administrative Units of Mongolia, upgraded to the province of Darkhan-Uul. Today it is one of the country's largest cities and an important centre for industry, agriculture and education. Do you have memories, stories or photos from Darkhan's early years or today?
