Dundgovi Province – The Middle Gobi between steppe and desert
Dundgovi, the "Middle Gobi", lies in southern Mongolia, about 245 km south of Ulaanbaatar, where the steppe gradually gives way to the desert. For centuries this has been a land of nomadic herders, who move with camels, horses, sheep and goats between seasonal pastures and wells. Rock formations and granite outcrops rising from the plains have long been places of legend and spiritual significance for local families.
Today Dundgovi, with its capital Mandalgovi, is the second least populated province in Mongolia, and its wide open spaces preserve a quiet, traditional way of life. Do you have stories, photos or family memories from the Middle Gobi? Share them with our community!
