Govisümber Province – Land of the Borjigin khoshuu since 1691

Govisümber's history is closely tied to the Borjigin clan, the lineage of Genghis Khan, whose ancestor Bodonchar is said in the Secret History of the Mongols to have founded the clan. In 1691, when the Qing emperor divided Mongolia into aimags and khoshuus, the Borjigin khoshuu of Setsen Khan aimag was established here. It was renamed in 1911 and again in 1923, and from 1931 the area belonged to Töv and Dornogovi aimags.

In 1991 it became Choir City, and since 1994 it has been Govisümber aimag, with Choir as its capital. Today it is Mongolia's least populated province. Do you have stories or photos from Govisümber? Share them with our community!
