Tinian – The island of the House of Taga

The Mariana Islands, including Tinian, were the first islands in Remote Oceania settled by humans, around 1500 to 1400 BC, by seafarers from the Philippines, with later migrations from the Caroline Islands and Island Southeast Asia. Thousands of years ago the island's people raised massive stone pillars known as taga, whose most famous remains form the House of Taga. Europeans probably first sighted Tinian during Magellan's expedition in 1521.

In the Second World War Tinian became the base from which the atomic bombing missions of 1945 were flown, a sombre chapter remembered at its historic sites. Today the island is known for its beaches and ranches. Share your Tinian stories and photos with our community!
