Gozo – Home of the Ġgantija temples, among the world's oldest

Gozo has been inhabited since around 5000 BC, when farmers from Sicily crossed the sea and first lived in caves near today's San Lawrenz. During the Neolithic period the island's people built the Ġgantija temples, among the world's oldest free-standing structures and religious buildings; their name means "belonging to the giants", as legend says giants built them. The Xagħra Stone Circle adds further to this remarkable heritage, and tradition even links Gozo with Ogygia, the island of the nymph Calypso in Homer's Odyssey.

Later the Carthaginians built a temple to Astarte here. Today Gozo, with about 39,000 inhabitants, remains green and rural. Share your Gozo stories and photos with our community!
