Malta Majjistral – The north-western region named after the Mistral wind
Malta Majjistral, the North Western Region, existed as one of Malta's administrative regions from 1993 to 2009. It was created by the Local Councils Act of 30 June 1993 and written into the constitution in 2001. Its name comes from the Majjistral, the Maltese word for the cool north-westerly Mistral wind, which has shaped life, farming and seafaring on the island for centuries.
In 2009 the region was abolished and divided into the Northern, Central and part of the Southern Region. Yet its towns and villages continue to carry the island's long history of chapels, festas, terraced fields and coastal towers. Do you have stories, photos or memories from Malta's north-west?
