Malta Xlokk – The south-eastern region that included Valletta

Malta Xlokk, the South Eastern Region, was one of Malta's administrative regions from 1993 to 2009 and took its name from the Xlokk, the warm Sirocco wind blowing from the south-east. It included the capital Valletta, the fortified city built by the Knights of St John after the Great Siege of 1565, whose bastions, churches and palaces are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Created by the Local Councils Act of 1993 and integrated into the constitution in 2001, the region was abolished in 2009 and divided among new regions. Its harbours, fishing villages and historic towns still tell the story of Malta's maritime past. Do you have stories or photos from the south-east of Malta? Share them with our community!
