Rivière du Rempart District – Where the Saint-Géran was wrecked in 1744
Rivière du Rempart, in the north-east of Mauritius, is linked to one of the island's most famous stories. In 1744 the French ship Saint-Géran was wrecked off its coast near Poudre d'Or, a tragedy that inspired Bernardin de Saint-Pierre's celebrated novel "Paul et Virginie". For generations the district's fertile plains were covered with sugar-cane fields, worked by families whose descendants form today's diverse communities.
Today the district covers 147.6 km² and is home to around 108,000 people, with coastal villages, lagoons and small islands offshore. Do you have stories, photos or family memories from Rivière du Rempart? We warmly invite you to share them with our community!
