Pamplemousses District – Home of Mauritius' historic botanical garden

Pamplemousses, in the north-west of Mauritius, takes its name from the French word for grapefruits. The district is best known for its botanical garden, founded in the eighteenth century during French rule and developed by the administrator Pierre Poivre, who introduced spices and plants from around the world. With its giant water lilies and historic avenues of palms, it is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the southern hemisphere.

Today Pamplemousses is one of the most densely populated parts of the island, with around 140,000 inhabitants living among towns, villages and sugar-cane fields. Do you have stories, photos or memories from Pamplemousses? Share them with our community!
