Port Louis District – The capital's harbour and the Aapravasi Ghat
Port Louis District, the smallest district of Mauritius, wholly encompasses the capital and has the highest population density on the island. Its harbour became the administrative centre of the island in 1736 under French rule, and later, under British rule, the Aapravasi Ghat immigration depot received hundreds of thousands of indentured labourers, mainly from India, whose descendants shaped modern Mauritius. The site is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Today the district is the country's political and financial heart, with markets, mosques, temples, churches and a busy waterfront, and around 118,000 residents. Do you have stories, photos or family memories from Port Louis? Share them with our community!
